Jonathan once again mounted the top step of the B Class podium with a fine run to 3rd overall in race two after what looked to be a struggling weekend for the 21 year old Bournemouth driver. The initial plans to run in the new generation Dallara F308 were scrapped after Jonathan was unable to find the finance to run in the European F3 Open Championship and having missed nearly all the pre season testing, jumping straight into an F306, a car he has never driven before, it looked dim from the start of testing with engine woes giving limited track time and no set-up was able to be performed. Finding it hard to find the correct set-up in Qualifying, Jonathan wound up 10th and disappointed with the general 'lack of grip' after just a few laps of running. It was then only a few hours before race one to find a solution... With a fantastic start, Jonathan found himself attacking ex-team mate and fourth placed Christian Ebbesvik at only the second corner before forcing the Norweigian into an error at the first corner and promtly taking the position. It was then a full attack on third placed Jesse Krohn before the set-up problems hit once again, and the gap steadied itself for a few laps. With the problems worsening, Jonathan could now only defend his position from the fast Bruno Mendez who would eventually pass on the last corner after a very strong battle for several laps. Race 2 saw Jonathan start from the front row, although the drivers around him would be on new rubber and this played into their advantage, with the extra grip off the line, Jonathan fell behind into third position. Chasing down the front two, Jonathan ended the race a lonely 3rd place and a win in B Class. "We really struggled this weekend, and to get a result like this is fantastic!" Jonathan further commented, "the whole team buckled down, we worked on set-up till 11 at night, the team continuing with the changes till 2 in the morning so a big thanks to Emilio De Villota and all the guys at his team". "This was a one off race to replace another driver, so hopefully we can find the budget to get to the next race in Jarama in 4 weeks time." |
